We’re all obsessed with having “perfect skin” and lots of time and money goes into creating a skincare routine that works best for us.
But have you ever considered how your diet affects your appearance?
Everything that you’re eating (and drinking!) impacts your skin!
To help, we’ve curated a short list of items you should and shouldn’t be incorporating into your diet to help achieve that dewy, soft skin we all dream about!
Green, red, and yellow veggies
Veggies are great for you and your skin, no surprise there! But did you know vegetables like spinach and kale can neutralize free radicals in your body? Or that tomatoes (we know, it’s technically a fruit) - can help reduce sun damage? Eating your veggies is a great first step towards improving your skin.
Foods rich in vitamin C
Foods like bell peppers, strawberries, and broccoli are not only delicious, but are full of collagen-boosting vitamin C, which helps promote your skin’s elasticity.
Water
Dry skin? Water is the easiest fix! Drinking water not only hydrates the skin, however, it can actually help plump the skin cells and delay signs of aging. Drink up!
Sugar
Who doesn’t love a donut or slice of cake every now & then? Everyone!…except your skin. Sugar can trigger insulin spikes which can lead to inflammation (aka pimples). Next time, pass on the sugary treats and instead reach for vitamin-packed fruits such as strawberries, oranges and blueberries!
Alcohol
Although a nice treat, alcohol could be a main culprit when your skin isn’t looking it’s best. Drinking leads to facial flushing, broken capillaries, and can worsen rosacea. Plus, it’s a major dehydrator, which can leave your skin looking dry.
Processed foods
Because processed foods have a high glycemic index and break down quickly in the body, they can seriously spike your insulin and cause inflammation. The easy explanation? It’s basically acne waiting to happen for your skin. Try and stick to foods that are grown in the ground or contain only a few, simple ingredients.

What is your favorite part about working for Hand in Hand?
My favorite part about working for Hand in Hand is the team. We are very small and very close knit. This makes work a fun and enjoyable place to be, even when it gets crazy and stressful. We all know each other so well and are very supportive of one another, both at work and in our personal lives. It’s really a dream situation in a dream job. I love it!
What is your proudest moment at Hand in Hand?
I have two. First would be my very first trip to Haiti in 2014. The experience of meeting the kids we help and traveling around the beautiful country was life changing. My other proudest moment at Hand in Hand was definitely when we got into Target. Personally, I am obsessed with Target and it was so exciting to see our products in stores last holiday season! The opportunity opened up our brand to so many new customers and allowed for us to make an even greater impact in Haiti through our soap and water donations.
What do you like to do on your days off?
On my days I off I like to go hiking and biking with my husband and dog, check out new restaurants and beer gardens popping up in the city and work on craft projects (most recently I’ve gotten into weaving).
If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?
An E! News Corespondent for the Oscars Red Carpet because I love movies, celebrity culture, and I want to ask better questions
What are you currently reading/listening to/ watching?
Reading: I’m currently reading The China Study, which is the most comprehensive research ever conducted about nutrition.
Listening: Childish Gambino and the Hamilton soundtrack because I am never not listening to Hamilton. I am also obsessed with the How I Built This podcast!
Watching: Orange is the New Black (one episode left!) and House of Cards. Netflix rules.

The Bag - I'm a huge fan of Studio DIY & their newly launched bag subscription service called Can't Clutch This! that sends you a super cute clutch every month! When I saw this month's bag, I couldn't resist the fun holographic bubble details (plus the soap keychain is so us)!
Balm - I never leave the house without one (or two!) of our Shea Butter Lip Balms. My favorite for summer is Coral with it's pretty pink tin and bright, citrus-y scent.
Lipstick - This formula from MAC feels like velvet on my lips, plus the vibrant pink shade is so much fun!
Cactus Notebook - You never know when a great idea will strike (+ it's more fun than using my iPhone)!
Cards/Pens/Stamps - Sending cards is my absolute favorite thing to do, so I always carry a few spare cards, pens + stamps so I never miss an occasion to celebrate! Local shops like Occasionette and Paper Source are my go-to card stores.
Earrings - I feel naked without my statement earrings! I even carry an extra pair with me just in case I run out the door without them. These are from one of my favorite jewelry designers, Jennifer Loiselle, who created these exclusively for ban.do.
Phone + Headphones - I am a walking commuter and love to listen to podcasts as I navigate around the city (usually with my pup Winston)! Currently, I'm listening to How I Built This, Start Up and S-Town.
What's your role at Hand in Hand?
I am the CEO & Co-Founder. I am in charge of overseeing everything we do. While it is my job to make the hard decisions, more importantly, it's my job to listen to those around me. Good ideas come from everywhere, you just need to pay attention.
What is your favorite part about working for Hand in Hand?
I love our team. While there are only 4 of us, we all get along wonderfully, understand the long term vision of the brand, and do our best to make work as fun as possible. Hand in Hand would be nothing without this small, dedicated team.
What is your proudest moment at Hand in Hand?
I have many. I could say the first time we got a PO from Anthropologie, or Target. I could also say the very first time we donated soap to orphans in Haiti, which deeply impacted my life and the way I see the world. I could also mention the daily pleasure I get from watching our small, dedicated team take pride and ownership over everything we do. I am proud of what we do, every day.
What do you like to do on your days off?
Most recently, I enjoy spending time giggling and being silly with my 6 month old daughter.
Top 3 life highlights?
Getting married to Courtney, watching the birth of my daughter Finley, and traveling.
What are you currently reading/listening to/ watching?
I don't have time for that. When I do, I enjoy listening to romantic french music.
How do you define success?
By doing the best you can possibly do, and putting your all into something. I do not measure success by outside standards. Success is a metric you much achieve at the individual level, specific to your person.
